What is a root canal?

“Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is Greek for “tooth.” Endodontic treatment (involves) the inside of the tooth.

Illustration of the anatomy of a toothA root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges.

To understand endodontic treatment, it helps to know something about the anatomy of the tooth. Inside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and creates the surrounding hard tissues of the tooth during development.

The pulp extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the roots where it connects to the tissues surrounding the root. The pulp is important during a tooth’s growth and development. However, once a tooth is fully mature it can survive without the pulp, because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.

Root Canal Therapy

What is a root canal?

At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.

If you experience any of these symptoms, your dentist will most likely recommend non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. We use local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort. In addition, we will provide nitrous oxide analgesia, if indicated. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

What happens after treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will it cost?

The cost associated with this procedure can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

I don't know how good your day can be when you have been up all night with toothache pain. After seeing my regular dentist, i was told that i needed a root canal procedure done and was refereed to Pa. Endodonic. I called @ noon, and they made an appointment for that day. (My day just got a little better) Once I arrived at the office and was greeted by Rose, who made me feel very welcome and assured me that they would do everything that they could to help me,, My day got a little better yet. Once i was in the chair for a few minutes, Dr. Ufberg came in and introduced himself to me, and apologizes, telling me that he would be a few minutes finishing up with his current patient, would be with me shortly and then would give his undivided attention and asked if there was anything that i needed. I asked if he could turn the music up a little, that i was having a hard time hearing it. (BEST CLASSIC ROCK MIX THAT I EVER HERD) My day got a little better yet. Once i was in the chair, he validated the fact that I did indeed need the root canal via x-rays and other hands on testing and then discussed the procedure and time frame with me. Once i was comfortable and had no other questions he introduced me to his staff and we got started. The procedure took a few minutes longer than anticipated, do to complications with the tooth itself. The doctor gave me all the time that i needed to complete the procedure properly, and than explained to me that the same had happened with the patient before me. (the reason for the few minute delay. LOL) my day got a whole lot better. The next day i received a follow up phone call from there office making sure that all was well and to see i can any questions or concerns. I said that i only had one question, and that was could the doctor tell me the station that we where listening to the day before and could he send that info over to me? as it turns out, it was a play list from his personal device, and he sent it over to me anyway, If one could have a good time getting root canal therapy, I just did. Thank you, to all that where involved in my care, and i hope that you are having a good day. H

Larry Ufberg D.M.D. is an outstanding Endodontic specialist. My dentist Dr. Valen sent me to him for a root canal and his awesome assistant Rose got me in the same day due to the excruciating pain I was in. They took me right away, explained why the pain was occurring what procedure was appropriate and got the job done all while conversing with Dr. Valen, which put me at ease since Valen has been my dentist for over 20 years!! His office staff were very kind, knowledgable and professional and Ufberg has a fantastic bed side manner and a great play list!! (music always relaxes me!!). The procedure went great Ufberg prescribed antibiotics and a pain killer and his office called me twice to see how I was doing. They went above and beyond and I highly recommend them.

I went to visit Dr. Uferg with tooth pain, assuming I would have to have my two upper, back teeth revisited. They were very tender to the touch and flossing was tear-producing. He took and x-ray, didn't see any problems, then began asking me very intelligent questions. When he asked me about my bite, I told him that four years ago a local dentist has ruined my bite and that was actually when my tooth pain began. My bite was torqued and twisted. Dr. Ufberg looked in my mouth and said, "I'm just gonna see what I can do about your bite." Forty-five minutes later, he sat me up and asked me how my bite was. I was in tears because I was so happy. It's very odd when your teeth don't align, after a lifetime of alignment. (The poor man; I was crying so badly that I couldn't open my mouth.) He and his assistant were so kind. I simply cannot tell them how much I appreciated their talent and kindness. I haven't had pain since then.
