What is a root canal?

“Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is Greek for “tooth.” Endodontic treatment (involves) the inside of the tooth.

Illustration of the anatomy of a toothA root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges.

To understand endodontic treatment, it helps to know something about the anatomy of the tooth. Inside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and creates the surrounding hard tissues of the tooth during development.

The pulp extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the roots where it connects to the tissues surrounding the root. The pulp is important during a tooth’s growth and development. However, once a tooth is fully mature it can survive without the pulp, because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.

Root Canal Therapy

What is a root canal?

At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.

If you experience any of these symptoms, your dentist will most likely recommend non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. We use local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort. In addition, we will provide nitrous oxide analgesia, if indicated. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

What happens after treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will it cost?

The cost associated with this procedure can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

I called the Doylestown office with an emergency first thing on a Monday morning. The receptionist, Karen, called the Ardmore office and got me in with Dr. Rigberg within an hour. Autumn at the reception desk in Ardmore was so sweet and welcoming. The dental assistant, Julie, took me back right away and she and Dr. Rigberg took care of my issue and made sure I was comfortable during the whole procedure. Dr. Rigberg and his staff are so kind and helpful. It’s clear that they truly care about their patients. I would recommend this office to anyone.

Dr. Ufberg took me in after 3:00 when my Dentist at Hatboro Dental Center could not help me with a root canal under a 4 tooth bridge. I was in pain and stressed so wound up locking my car keys in my van on the way into the Dentist office. The receptionist gave me a ride over to Dr. Ufberg's office. He numbed me without the slightest tinge of pain, which made me wonder why every Dentist or Doctor can't perform the same process? The staff fit me in as an emergency, for which i will forever be grateful. To end it all, the root canal was a difficult process through the bridge and calcium build up. This was the last thing Dr. Ufberg needed at the end of his day, however, he treated me like it was 10:00 in the morning. This Doc is "gifted". Thank you again!

I saw Dr Ufberg today for a surprise root canal. I was as scared as can be, and he was so patient with me and explained everything as he was doing the procedure. I honestly didn’t even feel pain from start to finish. I’m shocked when people talk about how painful these can be bc it completely was not painful at all. Also, the office staff is beyond friendly and welcoming with a happy smile. You know that they are happy to be working in a great environment. If I ever have to go back (which I hope I kind-of don’t!) .... I will totally go back to this practice! Thank you!!

I don’t think anyone likes going in for a root canal. However for someone with extreme and unrealistic fears like me, the thought is downright terrifying. Thankfully for me, Dr. Ufberg and his staff were extremely kind and patient. They did everything they could to ensure that I was comfortable. I ended up needing 2 root canals and I can honestly say I felt nothing. This was probably one of the best dental experiences I’ve ever had! Thank you to Dr. Ufberg and the rest of the PA Endo team - you guys are awesome!!

I had the pleasure of being accepted almost immediately for root canal which needed to be done asap. The office staff worked diligently to find me an opening, and did so with such a pleasant manner! Dr. Mike Ufberger was so delightful to meet. He maintained his genteel manner, always consulting with me to assess my state of comfort. He explained fully the procedure, why it is, what will be done, what is needed for follow-up. Have NO FEARS if you choose this practice. There is no pain and no need for anxiety. I just wanted to say thank you to Dr. Ufberg and the staff at Pennsylvania Endodontic Specialists. His staff was able to fit me in at the last minute on July 3rd as I was having significant pain in my lower left tooth. Dr. Ufberg used hot and cold testing to determine which tooth was the source of the pain. He quickly found that the pain was coming from my wisdom tooth and suggested a root canal. I was nervous, as this was my first root canal and I get anxiety when going to the dentist, but Dr. Ufberg was amazing! He explained the procedure and checked in with me often to make sure I was comfortable. The entire procedure was completely painless and relatively quick. I always anticipate and expect a certain level of professionalism when receiving dental care, but this office far exceeded my expectations. Not only were they professional, punctual and kind, but they also treated me with so much compassion. I would absolutely recommend this office to anyone in need of a root canal or other specialized dental care. And, the best part is I no longer have any pain!!
